The Chiverie

A French wedding reception could easily last into the next day, as celebrants continued to eat and drink. Eventually, though, the bride and groom would head to their new home together. This is where the ‘chiverie’ began. Chiverie were the pranks played on the bride and groom by their family and friends. These could include firing rifles in the old days, ringing bells, blowing horns, or banging pots and pans. The group would even sing ribald songs outside the couple’s window.

The couple, showing how much they enjoy their family and friends, would then invite the group inside and they would all have more drinks and pastries.

As a modern chiverie, If the couple is traveling after the reception, many enjoy the tradition of tying cans to their car bumpers.
