Hymen Being Broken

How do you know that the thin/thick skin that guards the vagina opening is broken?

If you talk to a doctor they can tell you, or of course the girl can just use her finger to see :) But really, why does it matter? We're not talking about a hermetically sealed food here. We're talking about a human being. Heck, the skin gets broken by riding a bike. It's not anything meaningful.
